Avidness Disadvantages

Avidness Disadvantages
“I have decided that the price of the smell of food shall be sound of money.” These words were said by I. G. Edmonds in his story Ooka and the Stolen Smellwhich talks about a poor student who lives over a tempura shop. Its owner is an avid man who goes to the court to complain of the poor student because he smells the fries of the fish. This rightly indicates the avidness disadvantages.
First, Edmonds says, “Of course everyone laugh at him. For how could anyone steal a smell?” When the shopkeeper goes to Ooka to tell him about the student who steals the fish’s smell, and he should pay for the smell. Indeed, his greed him lose the mind and do a stupid act to earn the money even though he knows that people will laugh at him.
Another thing is that the shopkeeper loses some money. For example, if someone gambles, and he wins at the first or the second times, and he tries to push his luck, he may lose all of his money at the third time. Thus, we see the shopkeeper be a close to call, and he is nigh to pay to the poor student when he hears the sound of the money.
In the story, the author needs that to show us we should be a kind people. Also, there are many things we cannot sell even though we make it.

  1. Hi Muath, it is interesting story! I can learn two things as you mentioned. The owner of the tempura restaurant is not kind. He shouldn’t blame the student for smelling the fries of the fish. As you said, there are many things we cannot sell even though we make them. In this case, actually the cooks make the smell, but it is not seen by everyone. I think we cannot sell something that we cannot see. The author teaches us that we shouldn’t be such a person, and being avidness has disadvantage. Thank you Muath, I’d like to read other stories written by this author.

  2. Hi Muathe! I was little surprised that I already know about this story!! This story is almost same with a korean fairy tale. Korean version is this. There are a rich who is so mean. Oneday the poor farmer passes rich's house and smells cooking fish. The rich tells him that you have to pay price of smell. The farmer is concerned about that and his wise son goes to rich and give him the sound of money. So interesting! I read this story when I was child and I wanted to have the wisdom like farmer's son. Thank you for sharing interesting story !

  3. Hi Muath, I enjoyed reading your short story reaction. I find the shopkeeper reaction is weird and unacceptable. Also, I find this story shows us a picture of people in this life who are greedy and avarice. We cannot stand how they want everything for them, and they do not get enough from money. They do not provide anything without benefits. This life is strange, and more we live more we will meet awkward people with strange and unacceptable behavior. All we want and hope that our friend life will not change them.

I like the story. It is pleasant and has moral lesson. The shopkeeper was so greedy. I like the moral lesson in the story. we should respect people and not belittle them whoever they are. The poor boy
was hungry and wanted some food that's why he smelled the food. The end of the story is best. The shopkeeper had to pay money for the poor boy.I liked the story and your reaction essay.

  5. Hi Muath,
I really like the way you start your essay by using a quotation. It grabs my attention. I have read this story before; it is a great moral story that shows the wisdom of the judge. At the end of the story, the judge let the shopkeeper to take out some coins and put them from the right hand to the left. As a result, the judge ask him to pay for the sound of the coins, so that is going to be equal or fair in the way the student pay for the smell. I really like this story is show that in some situation in life we should use some wisdom to deal with some problems that we may face in life. Thank you for sharing this story.
